The article focuses on the chemical properties of regenerated protein fibers for textiles. Fibers have been examined experimentally to a smaller extent than wool and silk, but in practically all the relevant aspects of chemical attack the student can assume an analogous behavior between the natural and regenerated protein fibres. Most of the fibres to be described have been treated with formaldehyde at some stage of their manufacture : to one or two types of fibre, however, a chrome tanning process is applied, and these gives a pale-colored fiber that is very stable but is suitable only for dyeing to dark shades. |
