The article focuses on the factors which contribute about name confusion between Mucomyst and Mucinex drugs. Confusion over the drugs is likely due to the increased off-label use of Mucomyst for the prevention of acute renal failure. Mucinex is approved as an extended-release tablet for use as an expectorant. Both names of the drugs contain three syllables with an identical beginning, thus, it contributes to the sound-alike characteristics of the drugs. Mucinex and Mucomyst have suggested doses of 600 or 1200 milligrams which being administered orally twice daily. Unfamiliarity with the name Mucinex and its use in an inpatient setting may contribute to the confusion. |
