The article presents information on the coastal ecology and geomorphology at the islands in Indian Ocean. The islands range from oceanic to continental, geologically from volcanic, limestone, granite, metamorphic to mixed and physiographically from low to high. The double chain of Maldivian islands is the largest part of the Laccadive-Chagos ridge. The Rodrigues island in Mauritius is a reef-rimmed island, with a wide expanse of reef platform and high coral species diversity. The coastal morphology of the islands off the Mozambique coast is composed of grasslands, scrubs and mangroves. |
