Sixty-three couples who had been randomly assigned to three different forms of marriage counseling were administered the MMPI on intake and again after 12 hours of their assigned form of marriage counseling. Those clients counseled in concurrent interview marriage counseling demonstrated a significantly greater reduction in their depression and psychasthenia scores and also in an aggregate clinical scales score when compared to clients in conjoint interview marriage counseling. Comparison with clients in conjoint group marriage counseling was inconclusive but also suggestive of concurrent interview superiority in reducing depression, anxiety, and perhaps a general level of psychopathology.
