Abstrakt: Concepts of physical, cognitive and economic linkages have become widely accepted and applied in many fields, including cognitive psychology, planning, architectural design and marketing. Use of corridors has been implemented in wildlife management, park design, community development and transportation systems. This paper summarizes and synthesizes literature from diverse fields and applications to suggest a framework for community-based tourism using an integrated system of linkages. Discussion is structured around six spheres of tourism linkages: physical linkages, information linkages, visual linkages, transportation linkages, interpretive linkages, and promotion and economic linkages. An observational assessment of the application of these concepts is presented for the community of Shuri, Japan, with recommendations for enhancing each linkage. It is suggested that this framework be subjected to empirical analysis for its efficacy as a planning framework and its impacts on both the tourist experience and community residents. Finally, it is recommended that community stakeholders be actively engaged in community planning and development to incorporate appropriate tourism elements and linkages consistent with community needs and preferences.
