The article presents information on the Project Flora Love Our Revegetation Areas (FLORA), launched by a small school district in southwestern Texas. Through this project, students living in the middle of the Big Bend National Park (BBNP) in southwestern Texas have become active scientific members of their community. The students worked closely with BBNP scientists and volunteers and their teachers throughout the project. Two teachers who had lived and taught in the BBNP region for more than 10 years conceived the project. Science content, community involvement, career exposure, and work ethics are addressed by FLORA. All the plants needed for revegetation projects in BBNP were grown in the Sul Ross State University's greenhouses from seed collected in the park before the Project FLORA. Students learned why they needed to revegetate damaged lands while on the field trip. |
