Abstrakt: In Germany, there has been a decline in mortality due to drug abuse since 2000. Nevertheless, in the year 2004 at least 1385 persons died as a result of illegal drug use. The number of opiate addicts is estimated to be about 150 000. The decrease in heroin and cocaine abuse is unfortunately diluted by the increase in designer drug and cannabis consumption. Almost one-third of adults between 12 and 25 year-old have already tried illegal drugs. The manifestations of drug abuse are variable; therefore, many cases presenting to emergency departments often go undiagnosed. Management of drug abuse and its sequelae is logically beyond the routine daily practice. This article addresses some of the illegal drugs with effects on the cardiovascular system and explores their potential therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
