Abstrakt: | This article highlights that author Ernest Hemingway was the first person to ask questions on the plight of war veterans who had died in the work camps of the U.S. Federal Emergency Relief Administration that were struck by a hurricane. These war veterans had helped the U.S. defeat Allied forces in Europe and the U.S. Congress had authorized a bonus of $1000 for veterans to be paid in the year 1945. After five years, the U.S. economy was affected by depression and unemployment was at an all time high. The U.S. government funded a construction project that would build an island-to-island highway from the Florida mainland to Key West to provide employment to veterans. The work camps were located on the storm prone places and were struck by a hurricane killing many veterans. |
