Abstrakt: Spatially resolved measurements of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) in a synthetic spin valve multilayer are demonstrated using an infrared charge-coupled device camera to remotely sense images of the sample temperature. The field-dependent emissivity of the spin valve is shown to be proportional to the GMR, and a sudden change in the apparent temperature of the material associated with the free layer rotation in an applied magnetic field is observed. The optical nature of this technique gives excellent potential for in situ monitoring and whole-wafer characterization of the magnetoresistance in spin valves on a spatial scale during growth.
