Sm-Fe-N powder was successfully consolidated into bulk materials at room temperature by the compression shearing method. Regardless of the applied shear stress, the resultant bulk materials retained the original Sm2Fe17N3 phase structure without any appreciable decomposition of the Sm2Fe17N3 phase. The density of the resultant bulk materials and the remanence of the Sm-Fe-N magnets increased with increasing the applied shear stress. A magnetically anisotropic Sm-Fe-N bulk magnet was obtained using the premagnetized Sm-Fe-N powder. The resultant Sm-Fe-N bulk magnet exhibited a remanence of 6.8 kG with a coercivity of 10.8 kOe.
