Abstrakt: This article presents a study on the usage of stone tools by capuchin monkeys in the wild, conducted by anthropologist Eduardo Ottoni. The use of stone tools by captive monkeys has been well-documented, however this activity in their wild counterparts is less common. Ottoni examined a group of semi-free-ranging capuchins in a Brazilian ecological park and noted that they had learned to break open nuts with the use of stones. Ottoni also observed that the young males members of the group seemed to learn this technique by observing older members and their proficiency obtaining food in this way. These older monkeys enable these observation by allowing the younger members to eat the leftovers.
