The article reflects on science education in the archipelago of Indonesia under the Dutch colonial rule. For 350 years, the archipelago was under Dutch rule until 1949 when it gained its independence. After the second World War, and especially since independence, Western technology began to be introduced on a massive scale. These changes induced a sense of wonderment, perhaps of fear, in the uneducated rural classes. The business sectors, primarily Chinese, were quicker to adapt to and benefit from the new ideas. |
