This essay reflects on the article "Under the Barred Umbrella: Is There Room for a Women-Centered Self-Injury Policy in Canadian Corrections?" by Jennifer M. Kilty. In her article, Kilty argues that self-injury in correctional institutions leads to policies that emphasize control and punishment rather than help to understand the broader context of the behavior. The author's expand on Kilty's themes and suggest that a standpoint perspective can contribute to prison policy. The standpoint perspective can reduce the distance between keepers and kept by providing different ways of addressing women's needs. Women participate more fully in sharing their interpretation of their own experiences in this perspective. |
