High reinforcement content AI Sip composites, free of porosity, have been fabricated by vacuum pressure infiltration technology. The properties and fracture behavior of the composites have been studied. Stress results in the brittle fracture of silicon particles. The cracks extend into the ductile matrix and lead to the final fracture of the composite. This explains the fracture behavior of the composite. The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the composites has been investigated by a high-precision thermomechanical analyzer. The CTEs were measured and compared with the predictions of three theoretical models and the experimental data agreed well with Turner's model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
