The calculation of probabilities has been applied to a great number of available data on the tensile strength of manila yarns and ropes. Typical Gauss curves have been obtained. The variation in strength of the rope is calculated from the variation in strength of the yarns; also the calculated relation between this variation and the increasing diameter of the rope has been compared with the results of experimental data. In conclusion, the influence of the testing length on the tensile strength is calculated. The results have led to the drawing of several conclusions, which must be considered in specifying and testing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
