Abstrakt: The article reports on the results of a study designed to determine whether surgical stress can induce a positive or negative lipoprotein(a) acute response and the impact of interleukin (IL) 6 genetic variability on the cytokine response to abdominal surgery. A description of the study's methods is provided. The study showed that lipoprotein(a) acts as a negative acute-phase reactant. The study provides a hypothesis to explain the inverse relationship between lipoprotein(a) and IL-6.
