The variability in regain among single small samples of wool of about ⅛ lb in weight, taken directly from the output of three scoured-wool dryers, was found to be very great. From the point of view of controlling the dryer performance, it was concluded that it was impracticable to obtain a reasonable estimate of the average regain of the wool (standard error less than 1 % regain) by testing such small samples on existing testing instruments. Increasing the sample size to 3 lb in tests on one of these dryers was not as effective as it was expected to be in reducing the variability. The significance of these data is discussed in its relation to the problem of the determination of the average regain of scoured wool and the control of dryers. Possibilities for reducing the between-sample variability are considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
