Abstrakt: The article focuses on the Hungarian sport culture. In most of the previous studies, the role and status of sport in Hungary is determined as an important ideological process. Sport, physical education, and recreation are conceived as integral parts of general education, which can determine the place and role of an individual in the socio-cultural hierarchy in Communist countries. Hungary, however, differs from other Communist countries. It has constituted an integral part of the international sport-community since the end of the nineteenth century and its sport traditions are rooted in the English heritage of sports. Hungarian people, reportedly, are very sport-minded. Most of the Hungarian people regularly read two popular sport newspapers, "People's Sport" and "Sport in Pictures." Sports are so deeply rooted in the national consciousness of the people that during the finals of the Soccer World Championship of 1954 the government ordered public places such as bistros and restaurants to provide live broadcasting of the final match. The formal patterns of physical culture begin with the enrollment of the child in the elementary school. The general organizational framework of competitive sports resembles the usual pattern of the other Communist countries.
