The article discusses the relationship between collegiate professional development and teacher education in the U.S. All segments of the country's educational community face extraordinary challenges associated with both change and stabilization. In higher, elementary and secondary education, there is growing awareness of the need for professional development programs. Many principles and methods employed in collegiate institutions for teacher development were initially borrowed from teacher education practitioners in elementary and secondary school programs. According to the author, to bring about significant changes and stabilization in faculty and collegiate institutions, it is essential that professional development programs be comprehensive, touching on most aspects of the teaching-learning enterprise, and based on diverse, though related, strategies. |
