The article discusses the effect of the new three R's, reexamination, retrenchment, and retirement on the form of education offered to students in the U.S. The reexamination process now underway at many institutions has created national interest in faculty development. It usually focuses on the need to improve teaching, which has had much attention recently. Retrenchment involved nothing more than periodic exhortations to faculty to be more realistic about their travel and expense forms. Retirement for anyone under 65 referred to going to bed at night, and retreat was a place to go get away from students. |
