The development is reported of capacitive sensors that can measure yarn or roving mass variations with a lengthwise resolution of 2 mm. The sensors can be mounted on a spinning frame or high-speed winder and are designed to have high sensitivity, good stability, and fast response while being versatile and easy to adjust. The sensors are interfaced to a computer, which enables data from 1-km lengths of yarn to be stored and subsequently examined in detail. Examples of the profiles and distribution of thick and thin places are presented, and the performance of the apparatus is compared with that of a commercial evenness tester. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
