Abstrakt: This article discusses representations of merit, gift, salvific images, commemoration of the deceased, and emptiness in medieval Mahayana Chinese Buddhist literature. Good deeds earn merit or "punya" that leads to beneficial future conditions including good rebirth. Generosity is construed as a perfection practised by bodhisattvas on their path to salvation.
