The article focuses on the graduate program for teachers of the disadvantaged leading to a master's degree in inner cities study offered at Northeastern Illinois State College. The aims of the program include: to help students gain cultural and historical perception; to give students an understanding and appreciation of the cultures of minority groups; to concentrate on minority-group children and adults in a changing urban setting; to guide students in evaluating the minority-group child's cognitive and affective experiences, needs, strengths and weaknesses of his culture and community resources; and to stimulate students who have instructional and curricular responsibilities in their professional setting to discover techniques that will improve the learning experiences of children. |
