The article discusses the role and importance of the Human Genome Project (HGP), which is a multi-national initiative to map and sequence the human genome. It is expected that the HGP research will lead to expanded newborn genetic disease screening, prenatal diagnoses, and trait carrier screening. On the other hand, these potential developments have raised ethical, legal and social questions, and have highlighted the fact that research is needed on individual, organizational, population and governmental use of and response to these developments. It suggests that health behavior and education research should be a focus to the expanding role of genetics in public health. |
