The article focuses on the research for defining quality urban teaching, its development and assessment. The boards of schools and the policy makers recently felt the shortage of teachers and to deal with the non skilled teachers they have come up with curricula to train the unskilled teachers. It is vital to understand the attributes that fulfill the criterion of the urban teachers. For a long term solution of the teacher crisis a more broadly defined and intertwined program of research on urban teacher competency, teacher recruitment and career longevity is required. To be competent urban teacher one needs to understand local urban cultures, the urban political economy, the bureaucratic structure of urban schools and the community and social service support networks serving urban centres. There are certain principles to be followed to make teacher learning successful. The teachers should participate in meaningful tasks in order to develop new strategies and stretch their skills and capacities, developing new practices, expand the shared store of knowledge and make their knowledge explicit. The evaluation of the urban teacher is necessary to enhance the competency of the urban teachers. |
