The article presents information on a study related to assessment of changes in HIV risk behavior and seroconversion among subjects who were non-injection, HIV negative sex partners of drug injectors. During this study, over one quarter of non-injecting sex partners began injecting drugs. According to the author, this conclusion is consistent with a large body of research that shows illicit drug use and drug injection are, in most cases, social activities facilitated by persons with whom the initiate has close relations. The high risk of injection drug users' (IDU) sex partners for initiating injection is, however, rarely addressed in research or interventions concerned with HIV and AIDS. Two HIV seroconversions occurred among this study and both followed the onset of drug injection underscores the potential risk of this mode of transmission for current non-injecting sex partners of IDUs. This risk is even more notable when contrasted with two previous studies of the sexual transmission of HIV in which no HIV seroconversions were found, even though all subjects had sexual relationships with HIV positive partners and none participated in other HIV high risk behaviors. |
