Abstrakt: The article reports that security has become a major concern for the cable network operators with the introduction of new services as high-speed Internet and telephony. Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification is the standard for delivering Internet protocol (IP)-based services over the cable network. It defines the interfaces and variables between a cable modem termination system (CMTS) and cable modem. A CMTS transmits a modulated downstream signal. Cable modem inspects the headers of each packet and makes a forwarding decision. The decision is based on the destination media access control address. Without additional security mechanisms, it would be easy to build devices that forward all packets. The Baseline Privacy Interface (BPI) defines the mechanism to protect the data privacy across the hybrid fiber/coax networks. The use of a encryption provides data privacy across a shared medium. The BPI specification uses the public-private key cryptography to distribute a shared key between modems and the CMTS.
