Abstrakt: The article examines the competition among several candidates for the Woodwardian Chair of Geology at the University of Cambridge in England which was vacated by Adam Sedgwick who died in 1873. Key issues in the nomination of candidates include the strategies behind the bland lists of successive professors for the position and how it has inspired outspoken opinions from British geologists about the relative worth of the candidates.
