Abstrakt: This article presents information about vascular dementia (VaD). Vascular disease is the largest single identifiable risk factor for dementia apart from age and the only one currently treatable. The incidence of VaD is about 3.8 per thousand per annum. An integral part of a diagnosis of VaD should be a statement concerning the aetiology because the treatment is that of the underlying cause. The earliest changes are usually those of small vessel disease producing white matter changes. These are termed as leukoaraiosis. Infarction also contribute to most cases of VaD.
