The article discusses the introduction of Performance-Based Teacher Education (PBTE) into the teacher-education process in the U.S. Building a teacher-education program in the performance-based mode requires three major components: selection of the competencies for which teachers are to be prepared, development of strategies which will build the selected competencies in the teachers and assessment of the degree to which the competencies have been attained. On the other hand, the problem facing teacher educators in applying the PBTE concept to their task is real assessment of the results of the effort involves the effectiveness of the teacher in producing desirable changes in the students, given a rather impressive array of confounding variables. |
