The article presents a discussion on shear-plate transducers as a possible alternative to bender elements for measuring the small-strain shear modulus Gmax of geomaterials. The bender element technique is routinely used to measure Gmax . Although it has been successfully used with clays, sands, and stiff materials, it has the some physical disadvantages. Shear-plate transducers are deemed advantageous over bender elements in terms of durability and convenience for use. Experimental comparison between the two types of transducer shows superiority of the shear plate, except in the case of soft clay, for which the bender performs better. |
