The article discusses the impact of Charles Dickens' Household Words and the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Great Britain. The Great Exhibition was not so much a realistic representation of the countries that appeared in the Crystal Palace, but an impression of the world as it looked on the psychological map of the early Victorian Empire. This map was not a static entity but continued to be contested. |
