The article examined the validity of the hypothesis that two brief pre-discharge interventions would improve transfer success for psychiatric inpatients discharged to an outpatient community aftercare program. A variety of explanations for transfer attrition are provided by research data and clinical observation. Two of the most plausible explanations are based on inaccurate expectations about therapy role behaviors, and informational deficits about follow-up. 74 consecutive inpatient discharges between March-September 1989 from a Midwestern community mental health center were used for the purpose of the study. Alcohol and day treatment program patients were excluded from the sample. A search of the archives for patients who met the criteria for experimental subjects between March-July 1979 provided a base rate cohort of 61 additional subjects. Treatments were delivered to the subjects via exposure to one of three videotapes presented on the day of discharge. In addition, the subjects received the center's standard discharge counseling routine. |
