This article presents a critical evaluation of the treatment of rheumatic carditis. A variety of therapeutic regimens for acute rheumatic carditis are in use at the present time. Based on information derived from different treatment programs for rheumatic carditis, areas of agreement include administration of steroids to patients very ill with pericarditis or congestive heart failure, acetylsalicylic acid for patients without it significant murmurs or with minimal carditis, either steroids or acetylsalicylic acid for patients with significant mumitirs in the absence of pericarditis and congestive heart failure, and a shift from acetylsalicylic acid to steroids whenever the carditis is progressive. |
