Abstrakt: This article criticizes the new plays in the U.S. in 1959. One of the most obvious characteristics of the new play is the strange assortment of characters which appear in it. The majority of the characters in the new play are abnormal psychologically, but it is the absolute sordidness and hopelessness of their lot, with little or no relief, that is keenly emphasized. The new drama emphasizes the plight of the common man, the little man, and the tragedy of ordinary people who unsuccessfully strive to cope with the materialism of modern society. The characters are far from being the majestic figures to which one is accustomed in classical tragedy. It is only rarely that the playwright artfully catches the stroke of tragic splendor.
