This article reports on a growing number of gold mining companies in North America that are joining forces to keep costs in line. Five Canadian companies combined to form Corona Corp. in June, which will produce about 458,000 ounces of gold this year. Placer Dome Inc., established in 1987 by the combination of Placer Development, Dome Mines and Campbell Red Lake Mines, is now second place in North America. In short, the brie-and-chablis crowd that were once only interested in economies, now wants economies of scale. |
