Abstrakt: This article examines the effectiveness of curative and protective spraying in controlling the spread of scab infection in a small apple orchard near Shrewsbury, England. The orchard, which was grassed down, consisted of approximately 900 12-year-old Laxton's Superb trees with 120 Worcester Pearmains as pollinators. The researchers used four treatments which were replicated in a randomized-block layout. These are the following: captan protective program; organo-mercury curative program; modified captan program; and dodine acetate program. All materials were applied by hand-lances operated from a hydraulic pump and driven by a tractor power take-off. The researchers have concluded that even in an orchard with a high level of inoculum, fruit of a very susceptible variety can be kept almost entirely free from scab by either a regular protective or curative program in which sprays are applied immediately after an infection period.
