This article describes the occurrence of cephalosporium stripe on wheat and barley in England. The disease is caused by Cephalosporium gramineum. Infection of the plant fungi greatly decreased grain yield and there was a significant negative correlation between yield per pot and number of infected plants per pot. It is usually assumed that severe damage is caused only when stems are bitten. Adding wireworms to soil inoculated with C. gramineum increased the percentage of wheat plants that became infected with the fungus. It is suggested that wireworms facilitate infection by injuring roots or other underground parts of the plants. |
