Abstract Features of the hydrolytic transformation of iron(III) basic sulfate under hydrothermal conditions at 140200C were studied. The influence of the conditions of the hydrothermal treatment of iron(III) basic sulfate on the rate and degree of its hydrolysis was examined. The chemical and phase composition of metastable intermediates was ascertained, and conditions for the formation of the final product of thermal hydrolysis, hematite of high phase purity, were determined.
