Abstrakt: The article focuses on the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. Sustainable development is basically about learning. It is a process that develops awareness, knowledge, and understanding of the environment and critical thinking skills. A powerful international consensus emerged following the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and became even stronger at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, Africa. The international community confirmed that education is central to achieving sustainable development, and hence the 57th Session of the General Assembly resolved in December 2002 to proclaim the 10-year period beginning on January 1, 2005, as the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (UNDESD), and designated UNESCO as the lead agency for the promotion of the Decade.
