The article presents information about an interdisciplinary health care course on Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD). The academic health care science center at the University of Mississippi Medical Center took the lead in addressing the lack of health care training in the U.S. Faculty in the School of Nursing took the leadership role in organizing an interdisciplinary committee composed of professionals from medicine, surgery, allied health, dentistry, and hospital administration, and community leaders within the State Health Department and Emergency Management. The committee developed a three-phase plan to meet the urgent goal of providing future Mississippi health care providers with basic knowledge regarding WMD and the role of health care providers in disaster preparedness. The course design includes a brief historical perspective of WMD; components of diagnosis, intervention, and treatment of the top biological, chemical, and radiological agents. The committee believed that assigned course-work should be graded to enhance student participation. |
