A study conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital explored the impact of postoperative patient portal messaging on emergency department visits after lumbar spine surgery. The research found that patients who messaged their care team through an electronic patient portal were more likely to visit the emergency department within 90 days of surgery. Patients with lower health literacy levels were particularly at risk for these visits. The study suggests that identifying high-risk patients and providing virtual access to care teams could help reduce unnecessary healthcare utilization. [Extracted from the article] |
