This paper aims to explore the lexical combinations and the semantic relationships of the Spanish word pelo in texts composed between the thirteenth and the beginnings of the seventeenth century. The starting point for this research is the online corpus of the Real Academia Española CORDE. It has been investigated entering the word pelo and searching its meanings (with the grammatical value of subject or complement) and its frequent combinations with either verbs that give a figurative sense to the expression, or prepositions and other grammatical parts of speech. The different meanings of the collocations emerging from the research, the mutual semantic relationships and the possible variation over time to which each expression is subject have been examined. Through this survey we will see the springing up of the different meanings of the word and the consolidation in proverbs, idioms or phrases of many of these combinations. Some of them have survived up to our days, while others have not. The survey also provides keys for the study of the motivation of the phraseological expressions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
