The Character Transformation of Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa in Film Adaptation is a writing that discusses the comparison between classical Malay literary texts in the historical genre and the film adaptation directed by Yusry Abdul Halim. Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa is a Malay great work that narrates the origin of Kedah Malays as well as their relationship with foreign kingdoms such as Rome and China. This study aims to identify and analyse the differences between the original text and its film adaptation in the context of of character and characterization by applying the adaptation theory by John M. Desmond and Peter Hawkes (2006) as well as using literature and text analysis methods to achieve the objectives of the study. The findings show that during the adaptation process, there are narrative changes that include important elements such as characters and characterization performed by the scriptwriter and film director. This change aims to present the story in a more attractive visual format. This study is expected to be a catalyst for researchers and arts activists to produce more film adaptations based on classical Malay literary texts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
