A recent study conducted by researchers from SBH Health System in Bronx, New York, focused on the outcomes and prevalence of complications in sickle cell disease patients receiving blood transfusions. The study utilized data from the National Inpatient Sample from 2016 to 2021 and found that while transfusions did not significantly impact mortality rates, patients who received transfusions had longer hospital stays and higher total hospitalization costs. The study also highlighted the low prevalence of severe side effects like transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) and transfusion-associated circulatory overload (TACO) in transfused patients, emphasizing the need for careful consideration when deciding on blood transfusions for sickle cell disease patients.
