This study investigates how the structures of ruling and opposition political parties in dictatorships relate to party strategies and authoritarian regime survival. We focus on two key dimensions of party structures: organizational strength and concentration of power in the leadership. We argue that organizational strength will encourage party reliance on clientelism, while concentration of power in the leadership will lead to party reliance on coercion. Using cross-national data from 1970 to 2019 that capture features of political parties, we find support for our expectations. We also explore how the structural and strategic nature of parties bear on autocratic breakdown. Our analysis reveals, among other patterns, that organizational strength in opposition parties is associated with more vulnerable authoritarian rule, a relationship mediated by the opposition party's reliance on clientelism. This study therefore improves understanding of authoritarian political parties and their consequences, shedding light on many potential avenues for future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
