Place names are essential because in certain cases they represent the culture, tradition and history of people living in a particular location. However, toponymic misspellings caused by incorrect pronunciation undermine the history of the local people as incorrect spelling imposes a name that has no significance or meaning to them. Subsequently, the current study sought to establish the types and reasons for spelling errors in some names of towns and villages in the Eastern Cape. The study adopted a qualitative approach, and a case study design was followed. Purposive sampling was used to collect data from signposts in urban and rural settings and documents from government departments like the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, the Post Office and the Department of Justice. Content analysis was used to analyse the data. The results of the study indicate that the incorrect spelling or orthography of certain place names in the Eastern Cape can be attributed to various factors. These include the presence of consonant sequences or clusters that differ between English and isiXhosa, phonological disparities between the two languages, and the use of inflectional prefixes to conform to English spelling conventions.
