Abstrakt: Conventional production of metallic strips involves various steps such as melting, ingot casting and rolling operation to arrive at a plate or strip. This paper focuses on the use of experimental and numerical approaches to get the optimized working window for the fabrication of green strips using iron-based powders. Selected iron powder particle size fractions, viz. A(< 53 µm), B(53–106 µm) and C(106–150 µm), were used for strip compaction having a width of 25 mm and thickness less than 1 mm for varied compaction speeds of 15, 20 and 25 rpm. Then the green compacted strip was evaluated for porosity with ImageJ software; further, density calculation of the strip was done. Simulation of powder green strip formation was carried out using a Discrete Elemental Method (DEM) technique with an application of the Edinburgh-Elasto-Plastic-Adhesion (EEPA) contact model. The results of the simulation were validated with an experimental compacted green strip. It was established that the predicted green density is in close agreement with the experimental green densities of the compact. Finally, a mechanism which depicts powder densification for roll strip has been proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
