It has become clear that economic growth is not the only way of expressing a country's development and progress. Recently, development has also come to incorporate the components of environmental protection and social equity within a broader perspective of sustainable development. One of the instruments that can be used to quantify this is the Green Growth Index (GGI). This facilitates policymaking in achieving sustainable development since it is based on four dimensions: efficient and sustainable resource use; natural capital protection; green economic opportunities; and social inclusion. The goal of this article is to present the GGI scores achieved by five non-EU Balkan countries in 2019 and 2020. The research points to the conclusion that each country has started on its path to achieving green growth and sustainable development, but there are possibilities for further improvement in separate/particular dimensions. Hence, a recommendation for these countries is that they increase their efforts in those dimensions in which they have lower values to raise their overall GGI ranking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
