The article discusses the need to reevaluate screening recommendations for cognitive impairment and dementia in incarcerated older adults. It highlights the accelerated aging phenomenon in the prison system, where individuals experience chronic health conditions earlier than non-incarcerated persons. The article argues that early detection of cognitive impairment in incarcerated individuals is crucial to prevent mislabeling, disciplinary actions, and violence, and may even lead to compassionate release for those with dementia. The authors urge the USPSTF to adapt screening recommendations for this unique patient population, emphasizing the importance of health equity and context in healthcare policy.
